Know your Ancestors:
William Carpenter of Rehoboth
The earliest Carpenter, from our family tree, to live in what is now the United States, was William Carpenter, b.1605. His father, William Carpenter, b. 1576 in Wiltshire, Howells, England came across the Atlantic with him, and is known as the Progenitor of the Rehoboth Carpenters (us).
The William of Rehoboth family came over on the ship 'Bevis' in 1638. sailing from Southampton, Eng. The elder William traveled with his son. William, his son's wife, Abigail 'Briant", and their children. It has been said by some that son William and his family were dissenters, and were obliged to leave the city of London.
William, the father, helped his son look for and buy land in New England. He then, according to some genealogists, returned home to England on the return voyage of the ship 'Bevis'. Evidently, his only concern was in seeing his son safely settled into his new country. ( No evidence has been found, however that he arrived in England. Some say that he went down with the ship 'Bevis', others, that he remained in Mass. )
The Bevis shipping list on file at the British Museum in London England includes this entry. "Southampton; 1638. The certified list of passenger's names gone for New England with 61 passengers aboard...... William Carpenter of Horwells, England, age 62, William, his son, age 33, his son's wife, Abigail, four children, ages 10 and under, servant, Thomas Banshort, age 14."
The four children of William who came on the ship Bevis were; *John, Samuel, William, and Joseph. Our line continues through *John Carpenter.......
