This indenture made the sixteenth day of November in the year of our Lord one Thousand, Eight hundred and thirty Between Philip Church of Angelica in the county of Allegany and State of New York and Anna Matilda of the First Part and Richard Ellison Carpenter of the same place of the Second Part   Witnesseth that the said parties of the first part for and in consideration of The Sum of One hundred and Seventy Six Dollars to them in hand paid by the said party of the second part The receipt thereof is here by confessed and acknowledged, granted, bargained, sold remised, released, aleined and confirmed and by these presents do grant , bargain, sell, remise, release alein and confirm unto the Said Party of the Second part and to his heirs and assigns forever.  ALL that certain piece or parcel of Land Situated in Township Four Range First, Morris Reserve in the County Of Allegany State of New York, being part of Lot Twenty-four on the Eazemoore Tract bounded North, South, and East by the lines of said lotand West  by William Smith Carpenter.  Containing  Seventy acres and forty hundredths of an acre be the same more or less  Together with All And Singular the hereditaments and appurtenances Thereunto belonging or  in anywise appertaining  and the reversion  and Reversions remainder and Remainders Rents and Profits Thereof and all the estate Rights Tithes Interest, Claims or Demand whatsoever of the said parties of the first part Wherein Law or Equity of in and to The above bargained premises with the said Hereditaments and Appurtenances To have and To hold the said bargained premises unto the said party of the Second Part his heirs and assigns to the sole and only proper use benefit of the said party of the second part his heirs and assigns forever.  And the said parties of the first part for their heirs and assigns forever.  And the said parties of the second part his heirs Executors and Administrators Do covenant  grant  bargain,  promise and agree to and for the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns that the afore bargained premises in the quiet and pursuable position of the said party of the Second part his heirs, assigns against all and every person or persons lawfully claiming or to claim the whole or any part of the afore mentioned and described premises, They the said parties of the first part will forever maintain and defend.  In writings whereof the said parties of the first part will have thereunto set their hands andSeals, in the day and the year  above written ~

1.  "About 1830, David H. Carpenter and  his brothers Richard Ellison Carpenter, bought a piece of wild land about a mile north of their father's farm, which they cleared. A few years later Ellison (which he was called) left the farm in David;s hands.  When David was about 34, he married Elizabeth Warner and farmed the land."

   About 1839/40 David and Elizabeth moved onto the land, which became the David Carpenter family farm. In the 1840 Census, Richard was then  farming his Father's farm, and his father, Richard A. Carpenter was listed as retired. Richard Ellison farmed  his father's land until he died in 1868.

(SS)   On the Sixteenth Day of November in the year One Thousand Eighty Hundred and Thirty before me the Subscriber A  Commissioner of Deeds of the County of Allegany appeared Philip Church and Anna Matilda his wife and acknowledged that severrrally executed the within Instrument and the said Anna Matilda on a private Examination apart fromher husband acknowledges  that She executed the within Instrument freely and without any fear or compulsion of her husband.  Anna certifies that she knows the persons who made the said acknowledgements to be the individuals described in and who executed the written instrument.

"After Robert Carpenter and his brother Judson, the two oldest sons of David Howell Carpenter,
returned from  the Civil War, they decided to build a cheese factory in  West Almond, NY..  This factory in later years became known as the Johnson cheese Factory. "

Indenture Between Walter C. Knight, Lucy A. Knight and Robert Common Carpenter

This Indenture,  made this  Tenth  day of January  in the year of our Lord, one-thousand eight hundred and sixty eight,   Between  Walter C. Knight and Lucy A Knight of West Almond, Allegany County and State of New York  Of the first part, and Robert C. Carpenter of the same place aforesaid;

Witnesseth, That the said party of the first part, in conderation of the sum of One thousand and eight hundred dollars, to them duly paid, have sold and BY THESE PRESENTS do grant and convey to the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns, all that tract or parcel of land situate in the
Town of West Almond State of New York and being part of lot No (106) One hundred and six and bounded as follows;   Beginning on the North side of the turnpike  & near the east bank of the creek that crops said turnpike at a stake near  the center of said line and running South seventy seven  West on the line of said lot to the south West corner and thence North 2 degrees East eight chains and 75 links thence North 77 degrees to the corner of a rail fence near the Middle of said lot No: 106, thense South 2 degrees East  along the line of said fence to the place of the beginning, ~ Excepting in said boundary four small lots sold and occupied .  One said lot as now occupied byPaul J. Perkins and about 3/4 of an acre sold and now occupied by W. J. Riley as the store lot and 1/2 acre sold and occupied by the Baptist Church and 1/4 of an acre occupied as a school house lot and containing ten acres  of land be the same more or less.

With the Appurtenances, and all the estate, title and interest therein of the said party ofthe first part,  And the said  Walter C. Knight           doth hereby covenant and agree, to and with the said party of the second part, his heirs, and assigns,    That the premises thus conveyed, in the quiet and peaceable possession of the said party of the second part, his heirs and assigns,  will forever Warrant and Defend, against any person whomsoever lawfully claiming the same or any part thereof.

Lucy A. Knight    on a private examination by me, apart from her asaid husband, ac-
knowledged that she executed the same freely and without any fear or compulsion of her said

The cheese factory was built on the turnpike in the town center, just  east of the church, where  the creek crosses the road.  The factory stood in ruins for many years  until the 1990s when it was cleared away by town residents.  At this time (1998) the church is  still used as a community center by  the Town of West Almond.

                                                                      This Indenture made this 3rd. day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty eight Between Robert C, Carpenter of West Almond, Allegany County, New York of the first part and Judson Carpenter of West Almond, Allegany County, New York of the second part  Witnesseth that the said party of the first part in consideration of the sum of  Ten hundred and Nineteen Dollars to him duly paid  has sold and by these presents  does grant and convey to the said party of the second part his heirs, assigns All that tract or parcel of land situate in the town of West Almond, State of New York  and being part of Lot number 106  one hundred and six and bounded as follows;   beginning at the north side of the turnpike and near the east side of the creek that crosses said turnpike at a stake near the center of said line of lot and running South seventy-seven West on the line of the said lot to the South West corner and thence north two degrees East eight chains and Seventy-five links; thence North Seventy-seven degrees east to the corner of a rail fence near the middle of said lot no. 106.  Thence South 2 degrees east along the line of said fence to the place of the beginning, excepting and reserving therefrom in said boundary four small lots sold and occupied, one small lot as now occupied by Paul J Perkins and about three-fourths of an acre sold and now occupied by Walter C. Knight as the store lot and one half acre sold and occupied as the Baptist Church and one fourth of an acre occupied as a School House lot.  Also excepting and reserving them from a certain piece of land contained within said boundary which was conveyed to Walter C. Knight, by party of the first part herein by deed dated 31 st. day of March 1868.    Party of the first part also...........

hereby sells to party of the second part the following described property on said premises to wit

Two cheese Vats,    Two cheese Presses complete    1 pair of platform Scales npw in the possession or John Deare   550 cheese sets and sets to match   1 servall car for factory use  1 curd sink   1 weighing can   1 sett of knives   1 wire Agitator  2 stoves  3 beds & bedding   12 chairs  2 looking glasses  2 tables  1 desk  5 cords of four foot wood  2 tons of hay in the barn  Wheelbarrow   all of the hoes   all of the rakes, spades, pick axes, pails and working tools.  common axe   Buck saws   hammers  conductor  crane irons  Milk livistens   1  pump   1 heater and connections to heater and all of the books in the house on said premises belonging to party of the first part,  two wash stands   1 clothes ringer.         This conyeyance is intended by party of the first  part to sell and convey to party of the escond part all and every species of personal property innumerated or uninumerated which is at the date hereof owned by party of the first part herein and now on said premises as well as the real estate above described.
Together with all & singular the herein ditaments and appurtenances thereto belonging or in any wise appertaining  & reversion & reversions, remainder & remainders, rents, issues & profits thereof and all the estate right title interest claims & demands whatsoever of the said party of the first part either in law or in equity of in and to the above bargained premises with the said  hereditants & appurtenances to have and to hold the said premises & property to the said property of the second part his heirs & assigns to the sole and only proper benefit & behoof of the said party of the second part his heirs assigns forever.
             In witness whereof the party of the first part has thereonto set is hand and seal the day and year first above written.

This deed between the two brothers, Robert & Judson Carpenter was written for the land,(See deed above.) and the cheese factory and all furnishings. 
The original deed was likely written in Robert's handwriting as it was on  narrow lined paper, in handwriting  typical of the time, yet
outstandingly clear and stylish.  Robert was known for his excellent handwriting.  (See how Robert's handwriting ability was used at the
end of the Civil War under "Patriots 1776 - Korean War" in the Index.)
"The Johnson Cheese factory was established in 1868 by R.C. Carpenter. .... Mr. Johnson purchased the establishment in February 1874."
