John petitioned the General Court of MA for a land grant at Quahaug, now known as Brookfield, in 1660.  He was granted a plantation of six square miles, provided that 20 families and one minister would be living on the land within three years. On Aug 6, 1665, he sold his land in Ipswich, which consisted of 7 acres, a home, barn, and orchard. He states in the MA Bay Colony Records, "Formally this land was my father Warner's meadow".

John is considered the "father of Brookfield, MA'.  He is said to have built the first house there.  His part of the land was 300 choice acres.  In 1673, John and the other inhabitants petitioned the Court requesting that they be granted the priviledges and liberties of a township.  The petition was granted and in December, 1673, a deed was assigned to John Warner and William Pritchard as trustees of the town.

PARLEY WARNER

"Parley Warner was a farmer in NY and PA.  Parley was a good farmer who followed his father's vocation and became a toiler of the soil.  He inherited his Mothers's energy and constitution and his fathers proverbial good nature, daring courage, physical energy, power of endurence and love of fun."  History of Cattaraugus Co. by L. H. Everts.

"Henry Conrad, from Thompson Co. (NY) during the summer of 1807 located on the north half of lot 37 and commenced to erect a mill, which he completed in 1808.  The mill was primative indded, but it would grind wheat into flour, which didnot alway resemble "beautiful snow" ........   In the early part of 1807, millwrights, John, Nicolas, and Daniel K. Cartwriht settled on the south side of lot 37.  Owing to some defect in the contruction the mill was not uniform in its mechanical behavior. There is on anidote in relation to "Uncle Hank" (as he was commonly called) and his mill which illustrates the fun loving propensities of the Warner family. PARLEY WARNER, who lived near the mill, on observing some customer emerge from the forest with a bag of grain across his shoulders, would stealthily approach the rear of the mill and seize the wheel in his Herculean grip, with muscles firmly set, await the coming ordeal.    The gate would raise but the wheel would not move, as it was firmily bound as the nymphs had bound Andromeds.  After muttering a few words not permissable in Sunday school, Uncle Hank armed with the necessary tools would go around the rear of the mill to see "vat vas der ail mit der dam veel".  By the time he reached the wheel, Parley would be concealed in the alders."
From, History of Cattaraugus Co. by L.H. Everts. 1879.

Parley has been remembered as a close and loving family man.  Many of his children expressing a love of life that no doubt they learned from their father.

Parly was a veteran of the War of 1812.

Our Line Continues through Parley's Daughter, Elizabeth "Warner" Carpenter

Elizabeth married David Howell Carpenter, youngest son of Richard Carpenter.   They married in 1839, at West Almond, Allegany Co., NY.  They had two daughters and six sons.  Robert Common Carpenter, their first son, may have favored his mother in looks, as he was of the sturdy build of his grandfather, Parley Warner.  More about Elizabeth, including a photo, can be found in the Index under "Carpenter of Butler Co.
