....I give my son, *JOHN CARPENTER, one mare, being the old white mare. my best doublet and my handsomest coat, and new cloth to make him a pair of breeches.
....I give unto his son 20 shillings to buy him a calf.
....I give to him Mr. Ainsworth's on the five books of Moses, Canticles and Palms, and Mr. Brightman on Revelations. and my concordance.
....I give to my son, Wiliam Carpenter, the young grey mare and two yearling colts, and five pounds in sugar or wampum, and my passet coate, one suit of apparel, and Mr. Mahew on the four Evangelists and the forteen chapters of Saul.
....I give him my Latin books, my Greek Grammar and Hebrew Grammar and my Greek Lexicon, and I give him ten pounds of cotton wool; and his son John, 20 shillings to be paid to him a year after my decease.
....I give my son Joseph, two of the yougest steers of the four that were bought to work this year, and to his son Joseph, twenty shillings, and to Joseph I give one of Perkins' works and of Barroes upon private contentions called harts divisions.
....I give to Joseph a suit of better clothes to be given at his mother's discretion, and I give him a green serge coat and ten pounds of cotton wool, and a match lock gun.
....I give to my daughter, Hannah, half of my Common at Pawtuxet, and one third of my inpropiate, only my meaadow excepted, and my home lot, and the land that I laid out to cousin Carpenter that I had for lowlands. I give to my daughter, Hannah, one yearling heifer, also I give to Hannah her Bible, the Practice of Piety and the volume of prayer, and one ewe at the island, and twenty pounds of cotton and ten pounds of wool.
....I give to my son Abiah the rest of my lands at Pawtuxet, and the meadow after my decease, and his mother and Samuel to help him build a house, because Samuel has a house built already. Only if my wife marry again, she shall have nothing to do with that land.
....I give to my daughter, Abigail, one young mare, three year old bay mare, and if the mare shall be dead by spring, she shall have 15 pounds instead, within one year of my decease.
....I give twenty shillings to John Titus, his for to be paid a year after my decease, but if John Titus come to dwell and take the house and land, which I sent him word, he shal have if he come, then he shall have the land and not the money.
....I give to my son Samuel one half of my land which I now live upon (and two pens of young sheep, two cows, one bull) and he now lives on, with his furniture and half of my working tools
and Abiah, the other half, and Samuel to have one Book of Psalms, a dictionary, and a gun and my best coat and one ewe at the island.
....I give to my wife the other half of the land I now live upon, for her life time, and the use of the household stuff, carts and plows, if she marry not. But if she marry, she shall have a third of my land and Samuel the rest; and she shall have four oxen, one mare, which is called the black mare, four cows, one bed and its furniture, one pot, one good kettle and one little and one skillet, and half of the pewter in her lifetime, and then give it up to the children; and if she does not marry, to have the rest of my land at Pawtuxet, which remainth, that which is left and not given to my daughter Hannah, and that which is left Abiah to have after my wife decease, if she marry to have it the year after.
....I give to my wife the books of Perkins called Christ's Sermon on the Mount, the good Bible, Burrough's Jewells of Contentment, The Oil of Gladness. I give her 200 pounds of sugar.
....My wife is to have the room I now lodge in, and the chamber over it, and to have liberty to the fire and to do her occasions, and she shall have the meadow that was made in John Titus' lot because it is near, and she is to have a way to the swamp through the lot. And if John Titus come, Samuel is to have two acres of his lot that is not broken up, and my wife is to have the rest; and Samuel is to break it up for her. Also she is to have the corn towards housekeeping and the cloth in the house toward clothing herself; and the children with her, and twine that she hath to serve toward housekeeping, and three acres at the island.
....I give to Abiah a yearling colt, being the white mare colt, and one yearling heifer, and Dr. Jarvi's Catchism, and Helen's History of the World, and one ewe. About my wife's occasion when she is at the island; Abiah is to care for her when she is at the island.
....When the legacies are paid out, the remainder is to be paid disposed among the children at the descretion of my wife and the overseers.
....Memorandum: If my son Titus come and do possess land, I said he could have, as namely the house land and orchard, and corn. Joseph had the land in two decisions, the fresh meadow, salt one last laid out, and not the fresh one I fenced in, to pay the rents for, for that he do agree, and if he go from it, he shall not sell it to any other but his brother Samuel or his mother.
This is my Last Will and Testament, to which I set my hand. William Carpenter of Rehoboth,
the day and year before written.
I make my wife the Executrix, and my Overseer to be Richard Bowen and John Allen, is to be kind to my wife, and I appoint my brother____ Carpenter to help, and to have ten shillings for their pains.
I, Sarah C. French of the city of Coldwater in the county of Branch and state of Muchigan, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do make, publish and declare this as and for my last will and testament, as follows:
First: I give and bequeath to my daughter Emma McCarty my large tea tray. I give and bequeath to my daughter Jane Rodgers one feather bed and pillows, Alexander's photograph, my parlor carpet, two lace curtains, caster and bottles and the silver candle stick, my silk dress and crepe shaw; To my daughter Charlotte Buell, I give and bequeath my mahogany post bedstead, best white quilt and on silver candle stick. To my daughter Mary Ward, I give and bequeath one white quilt, one bureau, one lounge, six cane bottom chairs, two lace cirtains, one matrass, one blanker shaw, one silver candle stick. I give and bequeath to my son George Shaw, a magnifying glass that formerly belonged to his grandfather Wooley. I give and bequeath to my son William Shaw, my best looking glass. To my granddaughter Alice French, I give and bequeath my fall leaf stand and to my granddaughter Eva Shaw one stand and tea caddy brought with me from Egland, and one wash stand, bowl and pitcher. To my granddaughter Hattie Ward I give and bequeath one stand and to my husband John A. French, bedding for one bed, three wooden chairs, my cook stove with the furniture belonging to the same. I also give andbequeath to my said husband the use of my clock during his livfe, and after his death I giveand bequeath the same to my aughter Mary Ward. I give and bequeath my gold watch and chain to my daughter Mary Ward.
Second: I give and devise to my daughter Jane Rodgers my house on the south side of Waterman Avenue, known and described as follows: Lot number 29 on the south side of Waterman Avenue in the thirs ward of the city of Coldwater, Branch County, Mivhigan, to have and to hold to her the said Jane Rodgers her heirs and Assigns absolutely and forever.
Third: I give, bequeath and devise to my husband John A. French for and during his natural life or while he should remain single (all?) rents, issues and profits, use and occupancy of the following property, towit: Lot number four on Waterman's addition to the city of Coldwater, Mivhigan being on the orth side of Waterman Avenue in the third ward of said city of Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan. After the death of my said husband or provided he remarries, after his marriage, I give and bequeath and devise the said last mentioned property to my daughters Emma McCarty, Mary Ward and Charlotte Buell, share and share alike.
Fourth: I hereby make and appoint Emma McCarty the executrix of this my last will and teatament, and I direct that she shall divide among my children and grandchildren all personal property of mine not herein disposed of,
according to her own discretion, provided; that any horses, carriages, harnesses, robes and blankets left at my decease shall be sold at once, and the avails equally divided among Emma McCarty, Jane Rodgers, Sharlotte Buell, Mary Ward andthe representatives of Mary Campbell deceased.
In witness thereof I have hereunto signed and sealed this instrument and published and deslared it, as and for my last will and testament On the 16 day of July A.D. 1891
The said Sarah C. French at the city of Coldwater in the County of Branch and State of Michigan the said 16th day of July A.D. 1891 signed and sealed this instrument and published and declared the same as for her last will and testament and we the undersigned at her request and in her presence and in the prescence of each of other have thereunto subscribed our names as witnessed.
